This group all started on a good walk across a Suffolk field in 2018 when we asked ourselves how some of the rocks and pebbles under our feet arrived there, and how the landscape was formed. We were joined by a small group of fellow u3a members who were equally inquisitive, and we have been meeting monthly since then.
The group is small enough to meet in a member’s house, has a simple structure of meeting monthly, except for July and August, and we adhere to the u3a principle of self-help study, learning and sharing. None of us are Geologists, but each of us have our own areas of expertise or study that we enjoy diving into: either a Period, a Location, an Event, or Rocks and Minerals to present to the group for discussion. We have been helped along the way by u3a Learning Resources, GeoSuffolk, various books, Open University, and lots of YouTube geology. In the good weather, we aim to have field studies or Museum visits.
In an ideal world we would like to have new members join our group, but, as we have been learning together for some years new members would, ideally, have some geological knowledge even if it was from school days. Alternatively, we would be very happy to help any members interested in geology to start up a new geology group and we have a lot of information and assistance that we can pass on to you!
